Who is Salt?
Salt, is an extraordinary whale and possibly one of the most famous humpback whales in the world. Researchers began identifying and cataloging individuals as early as 1975, and she was among the first humpback whales to be identified, known for her iconic large white dorsal fin. She was also one of the first humpback whales to be given a name. We know she is at least 47 years old, and her lineage extends to 15 children, 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Tracking studies of Salt have provided us with invaluable insights into whales. Salt is a respected "teacher". Moreover, whales serve as ocean gardeners, maintaining the health of marine environments, cycling nutrients, and fertilizing tiny plant-like organisms such as phytoplankton, which sequester carbon. The amount of carbon dioxide captured by these phytoplankton annually is roughly equivalent to that absorbed by 1.48 trillion trees!
WDC's Conservation Efforts
WDC (Whale & Dolphin Conservation) is working diligently to reduce the threats to Salt and her friends and family, the Whale Adoption Project – Symbolically Adopt A Whale supports WDC’s mission to protect marine mammals, expand rescue efforts and inspire global action and education programs. As part of their educational and advocacy efforts, WDC also created a life-size model of whales. This educational tool aims to help people understand the size, anatomy, and challenges facing these magnificent creatures.
The Connection between HIDIZS MP143 and WDC’s ‘Salt’
We named the HIDIZS MP143 Salt in honor of Salt, a matriarch humpback whale with a lineage spanning 15 children, 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Humpback whales are renowned for their melodic songs, which can last up to 20 minutes and have identical beats in repeated segments that are learned and sung by other whales.
Our partner, Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), uses a life-size model of a whale as a teaching tool for their outreach programs. This educational tool aims to help people understand not only the size and anatomy of these magnificent creatures, but also the key role they play in helping the ocean produce over half of the Earth’s oxygen. At HIDIZS, we recognize the importance of WDC’s efforts teaching us all about these climate giants and their tireless work protecting whales and their ocean home.
HIDIZS and WDC: Global Partners in Lifelong Conservation Efforts
Through the songs of humpback whales, we immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature's melodies, aligning with HIDIZS's consistent philosophy of restoring natural sound. With our partnership with WDC, we hope to share the songs of these ocean singers with music and nature enthusiasts while supporting WDC's exceptional dedication to safeguarding whales and marine ecosystems. Our hope is to connect with people who love music and nature through the MP143 Salt.
We’re Still Waiting for You to Join the Movement
The design of HIDIZS MP145 was inspired by whales, and HIDIZS continues to support WDC’s education programs. The new MP143 Salt, shares that inspiration and commitment to WDC’s outreach and education efforts to raise awareness about the ecological role whales play in the health of the ocean. Learning Salt's story highlights the crucial role whales play in maintaining the health of our oceans. We need your support.
