HIDIZS AP30 Music Boy Review - Kimpax

Kimpax sees the HIDIZS AP30 Music Boy as an ambitious gadget-style DAP that combines retro-game-inspired charm with serious audio functionality. Its palm-sized format, distinctive design and broad feature set make it especially interesting as an entry-level player or convenient secondary device for portable listening.

Compact Design With Thoughtful Accessories

Kimpax gives the packaging an A rating and is particularly impressed by the protective case. Its MagSafe-compatible magnetic system feels strong and practical, while the case protects the back and corners without hiding the AP30’s original appearance. A spare screen protector and useful cables further strengthen the package.

The black translucent resin model also makes a positive impression. Kimpax finds it rigid and surprisingly premium in hand despite its playful, game-console-like appearance. Its compact dimensions fit comfortably in the hand, and the inclusion of both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced connections stands out given the small enclosure.

Functionality Is the Main Attraction

Functionality receives the review’s highest A+ rating. Kimpax appreciates that the AP30 can work as both a standalone DAP and USB DAC while also supporting Bluetooth transmission. Gain settings, filters, EQ adjustment and microSD playback add further flexibility.

The reviewer also likes the quick startup, practical display size and battery endurance. However, the proprietary OS felt sluggish and occasionally unstable during testing, while the small controls required adjustment. Kimpax also experienced playback and connection problems with his particular microSD library and iPhone DAC setup, which he hopes can be improved through firmware.

Balanced Sound Beyond Its Appearance

Kimpax tested the AP30 in DAC and DAP modes with an iPhone 15, Apple Music Lossless and CVJ Jemine earphones. He considers the sound better than its playful appearance might suggest, describing it as reasonably resolving, clean and well balanced.

Midrange clarity and resolution are positive points, while localization is fairly accurate and the soundstage relatively clear. He personally preferred DAC mode, which sounded more detailed and lustrous in his setup. Compared with another similarly priced device he owns, Kimpax was surprised by the AP30’s more balanced presentation.

Overall Assessment

Kimpax views the HIDIZS AP30 Music Boy as a unique and ambitious portable audio product with considerable potential. Its nostalgic styling, compact form, strong accessory package and extensive connectivity make it an appealing multifunctional companion.

The current software and control experience may require patience, particularly for users prioritizing seamless DAP operation. Still, Kimpax believes the AP30 has genuine appeal as an entry-level player or portable secondary device, especially for listeners attracted to its unusual combination of audio functionality, portability and retro-inspired personality. He ultimately sees it as an interesting new kind of audio gadget whose versatility gives it value beyond visual novelty, blending nostalgia with useful portable-audio possibilities for everyday listening on the go.
