HIDIZS AP30 Music Boy Review - gardinerbryant

Dash reviews the Hidizs AP30 Music Boy from the perspective of a music enthusiast and a reviewer of retro handhelds and Linux-powered portable devices.

After using the AP30, he sees its main appeal in making music feel more intentional. Instead of competing with smartphones or app-based players, it provides a focused way to select an album, press play, and listen without notifications or endless recommendations.

Dash states that Hidizs provided the product free of charge for review without payment, editorial input, or advance screening of his article.

Physical Controls for Everyday Use

Dash tested the aluminum version of the AP30. He finds the construction solid and the player compact enough to carry comfortably throughout the day.
The AP30 relies on physical controls instead of a touchscreen. Dash says this approach works well for its size and allows him to change tracks or adjust the volume without looking directly at the display.

He particularly likes the textured volume wheel, which also incorporates the screen-lock function. After a short adjustment period, he found that navigating the player by feel became natural.

The buttons provide satisfying tactile feedback but are also noticeably loud. Dash considers this a potential drawback when changing tracks or playing the built-in block puzzle game in a quiet room.

A Clean and Balanced Listening Experience

Dash describes the AP30’s sound as clean and balanced, without exaggerated bass or artificial brightness.

During his testing, he listened to jazz, electronic music, alternative rock, modern pop, and Lo-fi rap. He reports clear vocals, good instrument separation, controlled bass, and a presentation that remained comfortable during longer sessions.

In his experience, the AP30 maintained a consistent balance across different genres without imposing the same character on every recording.

Dash also tested the player with the Hidizs MY LIN Mermaid Series IEMs. He found the combination comfortable and versatile across the music used in his review. The MY LIN IEMs were supplied separately for testing and are not included with the retail AP30.

Bluetooth pairing was straightforward, and Dash reports that the connection remained stable throughout his use. He also highlights USB DAC mode as a useful option for playing audio from a compatible computer or smartphone through the AP30.

Focused Software

Dash finds the AP30’s interface straightforward and appropriate for a dedicated music player. The screen presents essential playback information, while the physical controls keep navigation focused on the local music library.

He also notes that library management could be more refined, particularly for listeners with larger music collections.

Dash’s overall assessment remains positive. He sees the AP30 as a distinctive dedicated player that makes offline listening more focused and enjoyable.
